Buttecup had her puppies yesterday, i had a thread going, just wanted to make sure someone that could help saw this. I noticed this morning that two of her tits were swollen, i just thought that maybe the puppies weren't feeding off of those two, since they're the back ones, and i latched two puppies on to them. I just checked them again, and they're still pretty swollen, I'm almost 100% she has mastitis. What can i do for her? I'm trying to see if i can find a local vet that opens on saturdays, anything i can do in the mean time for her?!

I have a girl that over produces milk right after birth.
I use a warm compress and express some of the milk from her teats
4-5 times a day, until her body settles in to how much milk is needed.
As always consult your Vet if you are concerned.

Hi i had this same issue with my girl when she had swollen teats. It was not Mastitis it was just swollen as the milk flow was blocked. I did the following as some fellow YTers suggested. Which helped within 3 days she was back to normal and no more swelling.
You will think this is wierd as i did when i heard it but it works!

You will want to try and express some milk from it every once in a while. She may be uncomfortable with this but it is for her best. Also take a piece of cabbage (straight from the refrigerator) and roll it out until the veins become translucent. Take a piece of a wet damp cloth and place the cabbage on the her swollen teat and place the cloth over the cabbage. Hold this in place for 15 minutes at least three times a day.

Im not sure how this works or what it does but it just does! Good luck and keep us posted.

You've gotten some good suggestions here. I had to quote this post because it reminded me of a lady that I used to work with. In her family's tradition, in order to help her milk dry out, she would put cabbage in her bra and wrap her breast tightly.

Don't know how it worked but that's what they did.

Thanx for the suggestions, I'm definately trying out the cabbage thing. Sorry, I'm a worrywort... lol I posted some pics of the puppies on the Not exactly a Yorkie, but hey

this just happend to Tinkerbell: we tried the cabbage 1st, didn't really do anything, then took her to the vet, he put her on an anti inflamitory and antibiotic, and I still used a wet warm compress. this all worked well- I would say take her to the vet and get her started on an antibiotic (amoxicillin) so she does not get an infection, good luck

she can still nurse when taking the meds your vet recomends.

When the mothers milk first starts to come in the body has not quite adjusted to the amount it has to make...If any of the teats are overfilled with milk the puppies can not latch on to empty the ducts of milk...

If this happens just gently express some milk, just enough to make it more pliable...The pups will be able to latch on and begin nursing on those teats...If you over express then you are just telling the body that this much milk is needed and you will not solve the problem...I highly doubt your mom has an infection this early but left unattended to she will...

Keep mommas teats clean and hair clipped away...We always take moms temp a couple times a day for a couple weeks after whelping...A temperature 103 or higher and off to the vet we go!...Good Luck!

Thankyou so much for your replies... I really appriciate all the good advice. I took her to the vet this morning just to make sure everything was ok(there's a vet down the street that's opened 7 days a week!!!) He said she was just engorged, and to let the puppies nurse on those two as much as possible... temp was normal at 101.4, and he said all the puppies looked great. So yay! all's well

He just said to take her back if temp went over 103...

This is what I've found when googling how cabbage leaves work for swelling and Mastitis:

Cabbage releases various anti-inflammatory chemicals as well as phytohormones. Leaving the leaves in the bra will have a slow-release effect as the body warms them and draws out beneficial chemicals.

Hot cabbage poultices have also been used for sprains and strains and to draw out splinters. I used the above remedy to treat a breast abscess (a side-effect of mastitis) resistant to antibiotics. Greek women used vine leaves for the same purpose. It would be interesting to find out if the leaves have the same chemicals in them.
