Becoming a breeder How does one take the steps to becoming a breeder? I am very interested but want to be fully prepared. I have read alot of discussions where someone asks a question and the breeders jump all over them for being unexperienced. I want to start off, but want to know the right way. I want the breeders thumbs up!

I think people get 'jumped on' as you put it, when they actually start breeding without any knowledge of it whatsoever. As you can tell, the members there are very passionate about these little guys and get quite upset when they get the indication that the best interests and safety of the dogs in not being taken into consideration. Someone looking to educate themselves and learn FIRST, as you are attempted to do, should get nothing but support, IMO. It's really a question with a very broad answer. For starters, do you know any reputable breeders in your area? I would suggest checking around, attending some shows or events if possible and introducing yourself and explaining your intentions. In the meantime, read all you can get your hands on and don't be afraid to ask questions, either here or elsewhere. Ideally, you will be able to find a breeder to mentor you who's goals and priorities match yours. Working with someone experienced who can help you with hands on experience-being able to see first hand quality representations of the breed, teaching you about breed specific issues and genetics, helping you gain experience with whelps. This type of experience is crucial and will better prepare you for your future breeding endevours and give you an idea as to what you can expect. Welcome to YT!

Thanks! Those all sound like great ideas. I have some good experience with animals already. I currently work at a vet office and have been there for about 4yrs now. So if I started breeding, I can take my dogs to the vet at anytime, no questions asked. I have also been involed in many c-section deliveries and other type of surgeries. I am studying to be a groomer and with just that, we have to learn about the breeds in detail. I have a female and male yorkie and would love to breed them but wanted to learn more first. I also have tons of books on yorkies. I fell in love with the breed and would love to get into it. My stepfather also bred about 4 types of dogs within the last 15yrs. I feel like I have a lot of knowledge but still not enough. Again, thanks for the advice! Last edited by danamp86; 08-07-2008 at 07:13 PM.

Sounds like you are off to a great start already! If you are interested in breeding the pair you already have, I would suggest having them evaluated first. Find a breeder who can help you point out their flaws and strengths and who can help you determine if they will be a good match for one another.

Yikes... I guess I spoke too soon. I had my yorkies in a kennel for the past 2wks because I was out of town. When I came back I noticed that my female was fat! She's got a tiny tummy so I noticed the difference immediately. We noticed her in heat around June 14 so we seperated them right then and there. Her nipples were a little swollen the last few weeks but they got like that last time she was in heat. Evidentally we were too late in seperating them and I know we didn't put them back together too soon (my vet made sure of that). When I picked them up from the kennel today, the girl said "Congrats, your having puppies soon." She assumed that we knew. I asked my vet how we could have missed this and he said that we probably didn't pull them apart soon enough and they must have tied. And she just started showing in the last week because she should be having them soon. So now I'm freaking out because I wasn't prepared for this. I do want to breed but I was going to prepare myself a little more. Now I am desperate for some advice. I am only able to attach one picture that I took and it's kind of dark so I hope you all can see it. My vet did indeed confirm that she is pregnant and should probably have them in the next 2wks. He said she is completely healthy and will be a great mom. I'm excited but scared. He offered to do an xray but I was in a hurry so I may go back for that next week. I really am so excited, I would just like some advice please! My finances are okay and my mother doesnt work so she can stay home and care for the puppies and of course I will bring them to my vet to make sure they are all okay. Thank you for your time!! My yorkies mean a lot to me and I want to give them the best care. Dana Female: Jelly Bean Born: December 2006 Male: Reesie Cup Born: October 2006

BANNED! | The best advice I can give you is too find a breeder near you as a mentor cause nothing happens like the text book. There seems to always be things that happen unexpectedly and almost always seems to be after vet hours. |
