Default as a breeder, what route would you go?

okay i had a litter of yorkies born the other day..yay!
i am limited in the amount of dogs i can have right now..i want to breed i really enjoy it! its makes me so happy..even my husband says there is a great change in me when we have the babies.

i currently now only have 1 breeder female...these are the options i was looking at (we have another older female too so i can only add 1 more )

Gidget had 5 babies..3 males 2 females i orginally was thinking of keeping one female so that i have two females that can be breed..but then i would need to stud..not a big problem because i have know someone that has a male..

i dont think keeping a male would be good because i dont want to take a chance on inbreeding

i could home all of the puppies and purchase a smaller male to add to my breeding program? im thinking a 4-5lbs male. and just take my time looking so that i dont take a chance getting another larger male

so far i havent talked my husband into a 4th and i honestly dont want that many right now plus im not sure how the landlord would like seeing 4 dogs...she knows about the ones i have and she knows that i breed a little...she doesnt have a problem with that at all

has any breeder ever taking a deposit on a puppy and then later decided they wanted to keep that puppy? what do you do at that point? ( this hasnt happened im just asking) i know my last litter there was a beautiful girl and even my hubby wanted to keep her and i wished i hadnt let her go

thanks

I can honestly say I have never taken a deposit on a puppy and then changed my mind. There has been a few cases where I kept the wrong pup and ended up selling her for one reason or the other. Adding a male to your household would add a lot of additional problems. It is a lot of extra work dealing with males because you have to keep them separated when the females come in heat. You have to put up with the pacing, whining and crying because the stud will want to get to the female. Unneutered males usually mark a lot, especially when a female is in heat. At this point I think you would be better off either keeping a female if you like one of the pups, or sell both and get a female from a different line. Then I would wait about a year and then look for a male that is already somewhat mature (6 months to 2 years) and add him to your breeding program.

I would never take a deposit then send it back just because I wanted to keep the puppy. This is not right. BUT, I have cancelled sales and returned deposits for other things such as finding out the buyer lied to me or it wasn't the best home. I have one of Ceeby's girls here and there is no chance of inbreeding because when she is in heat, they are never down at the same time. BUT, I do have another stud and he tries to fight Ceeby when a girl is in heat. On the other hand, if you keep your girls, make sure you don't box yourself in where you have nothing to breed them to. What I would do is keep the two girls, sell the boys and use that money to purchase a smaller male with a good pedigree. By the time the girls are ready to breed, he will be old enough.

I am kind of in the same situation. I am currently starting my breeding program over. I purchased a female from my breeder, she's 13 month's old, I will breed her to my breeder's CH male and hopefully keep a female from that litter. I am also waiting to bring home a male puppy from the breeder, not related to either females and plan on useing him to breed to both of my females. It's gona take time but paitence is the name of the game. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Default buyer

I tell the buyer I have 2 or 3 pups, whatever...I will be placing one in a pet home..if they would like to take the pet puppy when I decide at 12/16 etc weeks who it is, then they may wait..if not best wishes...I certainly understand not wanting to wait, but most wait. I have waited on a breeders to decide who was being let go and if it worked for me, I took it, if not, I did not...

I waited to start my breeding program until we built a home and moved out into the country. I'm really glad I did as it is a comfortable and safe place for my babies. Get good females but make sure your male is of superior quality as he will be producing more pups than your individual gals. See if you can get up to Fredericksburg in April for the show, we'll have some of the top kennels in VA there.

You can get information on infodog.com. The show is at the fairgrounds and runs from Wed. Apr. 2 -Sat. the 5th than we head up to Maryland to show on Sunday. The Maryland show is at the Calvert County Fairgrounds in Fredrick. We got snowed out on the weekend last year so we're hoping to have better luck this year.

I did something like that the other day, a person gave a deposit, and then I decided to sell the puppy to a friend that the person who got my other puppy. They really care about the girls, they show me the love for the puppy, meanwhile the other lady just told me that she wants to breed and never had a dog before......?she lie to me about her name and I said that the puppy was sick and decided not to sell the puppy to her, but she got upset..... is longggg. But does anybody now if this can be a problem with me? I didn't sign a contract but I did sign a paper saying I selling a dog to .... deposit...... Please help me with some advise, I know I did the rigth thing for mi girl, but maybe not for me....

A deposit is to guarantee that the BUYER won't change their mind. But the BREEDER has every right to change their mind about selling the puppy for any reason. If you felt like the person that put a deposit down wouldn't be a good home, then you did the right thin.
