I agree but would really like to see it discussed in another thread. In this case breeders are just as upset about what AKC is doing with the volume breeders. In the case of unsound dogs in England, breeders are doing this to their dogs. I just feel one or the other will get lost and I feel both of these topics are very important but hey..up to you guys.

Now the second time around they do better like i did as dd is AKC but she has more health issues than my puppy mill dog so why I asked at the pet expo the rep from AKC what happens when an owner has a dog that is AKC with health issues as dummy me thought i was doing better getting an akc dog the second time but probably a byb dog that was akc. I thought i was doing better the second time around avoiding a pet store

I agree not all health issues can be avoided like liver shunt has no genetic marker BUT inbreeding can lead to many health issues so why is inbreeding done so much as vet said dd is inbred as dummy me again did not know how to read the akc papers.

I think many people do not understand it all nor educate themselves until something bad happens and they trust people that they are going to get a puppy that is healthy or at least a good chance of it. I still do not understand it all but I hate seeing these dogs suffer and owners with broken hearts.

I was under the misunderstanding that the akc was looking out for what was right for the breed and for the dogs to be as healthy as possible

Here's a statistic.....not sure how they can attribute all these dogs to mills, but mills certainly spike the numbers.

"Puppy mills mean big revenues for the AKC. In 2006 the American Kennel Club (AKC) registered 870,000 individual dogs and 416,000 litters. At $20 per dog and $25 per litter (plus $2 per puppy), AKC brought in well over $30 million in revenues from registration of dogs born in puppy mills".

I was under the misunderstanding that the akc was looking out for what was right for the breed and for the dogs to be as healthy as possible glad to know that they are requiring health checks now - has that always been the case? is it mandatory or voluntary that they do this to register their dogs?

I am guessing this information is correct and I am not going to go and look at past annual reports but they are there is someone wanted to confirm. I believe they are using volume kennels for this information or AKC published the registrations from their volume breeders. Really AKC does not hide anything but the studbooks from what I can gather.

They just seem to pop up in all my searches lately

. I only questioned how they came to their conclusion as it wasn't real clear, but I'm confident the #s are accurate.

The # of litters registered is huge. That figure likely represents two million pups or more.

When you look at numbers like this...they are banking on people dumping their dogs for new ones...and why worry about health concerns...the dogs can be easily replaced with new ones..

Everyone is happy and making $$$.

I posted this snap from the AKC's 2009 income statement. You can see that over half their revenue comes from registration fees.

I saw a claim that they actually lose money on shows, which makes up another 1/4 of their revenue... I'll check out the operating costs next.
