| No...it's fine to stay on topic....and quite the novel idea . But if this one starts dragging along, we've got a 'plan B'.

I think many people do not understand it all nor educate themselves until something bad happens and they trust people that they are going to get a puppy that is healthy or at least a good chance of it. I still do not understand it all but I hate seeing these dogs suffer and owners with broken hearts. I was under the misunderstanding that the akc was looking out for what was right for the breed and for the dogs to be as healthy as possible Last edited by dwerten; 04-22-2010 at 06:45 PM. | |

| Here's a statistic.....not sure how they can attribute all these dogs to mills, but mills certainly spike the numbers. "Puppy mills mean big revenues for the AKC. In 2006 the American Kennel Club (AKC) registered 870,000 individual dogs and 416,000 litters. At $20 per dog and $25 per litter (plus $2 per puppy), AKC brought in well over $30 million in revenues from registration of dogs born in puppy mills". From this link... | I was under the misunderstanding that the akc was looking out for what was right for the breed and for the dogs to be as healthy as possible glad to know that they are requiring health checks now - has that always been the case? is it mandatory or voluntary that they do this to register their dogs? |

The # of litters registered is huge. That figure likely represents two million pups or more.

We can not make this better unless we educate people to what is really going on but I am not sure people really want to understand...

| AKC reps at dog auctions 'One of main players at the auction was the AKC Representative, whom the auctioneers introduced at the start of the auction the first day, urging folks to see her and “she’d set ya’ll up”, proclaiming that “AKC-registered pups means money in the bank!" The AKC rep was a woman in her late 60’s who floated around the warehouse with a clipboard, toting a heavy stack of forms and certificates, while grasping a microchip scanner. She always stood near the auction block or the front of the room in plain view. She was one person I never lost site of throughout the event. She would watch for cues from the breeders who would signal her to come “certify” their litters. She would scan dogs for registry numbers, so that puppies could be served papers, AKC papers, that is. People paid her a fee to “legitimatize” dogs to the outside world. ************************************************** *** From this link... Puppy Mills and the AKC

Thor's Human Donating Member | I posted this snap from the AKC's 2009 income statement. You can see that over half their revenue comes from registration fees. I saw a claim that they actually lose money on shows, which makes up another 1/4 of their revenue... I'll check out the operating costs next.
