I too did a presentation in my speech class years ago about puppy mills. I used a PowerPoint presentation and made sure to include pictures. Most of my classmates as well as my professor had no idea what they were and were horrified by the pictures. Good luck.
The dog breed ban would probably be a really good subject. Another one that usually gets things pretty riled up and causes a lot of discussion (teachers usually like that) is abortions (whichever side you stand on).
