My puppy Belle already had her chip before I took her home, she was about 16 weeks old so it was done a few weeks earlier. I had my shih tzu chipped when he was neutered at 5 months. I feel that it is a necessity and it is very safe. My big dog is chipped as well.
My BF had his two dogs chipped when they were neutered/spayed also. Because of the microchips he got them back when they escaped after a windstorm damaged part of his fence. They were home w/in a day.
