Rio never had her first heat by the time she was spayed at 8 1/2 months old, so we were lucky. I had scheduled her spay surgery a month in advance and I was worried she would go into heat and we would have to postpone the surgery. Our breeder said the same thing about waiting until she was older so she would put on more weight and lose some baby teeth. She did lose some baby teeth on her own, starting at around 6 months. I would find her baby teeth in our carpet (I saved 4 of them!). She had her last four baby teeth pulled at the same time of her spay.
Our vet said she was perfectly safe to get spayed, even at 2.6 lbs. She said the more important thing is that her organs are fully developed in order to handle the anesthesia, not so much her weight/size. We had the pre-op blood work done as well to be sure her liver could metabolize the anesthetic drugs/gases. All went well and she's pretty much recovered - just a little scab on her belly now.
