My girl generally only passes stinky gas noticeably when she's been fed any chicken (by)product whether it's been processed or fresh (human grade boiled/steamed, etc.), dry or wet. It's almost a non-issue when I don't feed chicken at all.
Some dogs don't process some foods properly perhaps, so it might be a certain ingredient or several in the puppy chow you've been feeding that doesn't sit well with your pup.
