When I first got my pup I went to Petco and spent a small fortune for basic supplies like a bed, puppy gate, potty pads, leash, collar, toothbrush, shampoo, etc.

But then I slowly started to shop around and realized that I had overpaid on almost EVERYTHING I bought. The retractable leash, puppy gate, and potty pads were all cheaper at Wal-Mart and Target... so I learned a valuable lesson. Also- for premium dog foods I found out that my local independant pet stores carry more of the higher quality or specialty items like Merrick, Canidae, Wellness, Chicken Soup for Doglover's foods and Petco does not (except for Wellness). You can find a better selection of items like harnesses and bully sticks through yorkietalk too. I try to buy as much as I can from the independant stores or from yorkietalk members just to support smaller businesses.
