The grate is easy to rinse the pee off of, but it is the poo that gets stuck in the little squares that is a bear to clean. I tried that and decided it wasn't for me.
I just take the used potty pads and fold them in fourths with the dirty side in and stack next to the washer until I am ready to wash. The smell stays inside. No stink. You could also put them in a garbage bag if you wanted, but I have found that this works for me.
