Default Grooming question for long coats

I just brought home a one year old Yorkie a couple weeks ago (my second one, they are addicting!) and she is the sweetest thing ever! Our breeder shows Yorkies and was keeping little Isabelle (we call her Izzy) to show but she didn't get big enough so now she's ours!

Her coat is long and probably about an inch from the floor. Her coat is beautiful but I want to take a couple inches off it, it is just too long and gets in the way when she goes potty and I don't want to have to tie the hair away from her bottom all the time like they do with show dogs. Anyway, I called our breeder who also grooms dogs and she said with the silky coats you can always see the scissor marks when you cut off length like that. Does anyone know if there is way she can cut it without it being so obvious? Like layering or something? I just want to get a little bit of length off but I don't want it to look so blunt. Any suggestions?
