Yorkshire Terrier's Murder Stumps S.I. Couple
John Slattery
Reporting
(CBS) STATEN ISLAND Who killed Eddie? Eddie is a Yorkshire Terrier who was shot and killed on the steps of a Port Richmond, Staten Island home.
Michael Buckley and his wife Marie are angered, and stumped over who shot and killed their dog.
"It's just horrible,” said Michael Buckley. Horrible."
The dog was an eight-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named Eddie.
Buckley, a theatre journalist, and his wife Marie, who lived in Manhattan, moved into the home of Marie's mother after she died in April to look after her two dogs and several cats, and they brought along their Yorkie. Tuesday afternoon, he was shot.
The Buckleys say Eddie was sitting on the front step, and the front doors were open, when suddenly, he ran into the house, yelping.
"He came in like he was shot out of a cannon," said Michael Buckley.
Marie Buckley found him in the bathroom. When she picked him up, he was all bloody, and badly bleeding.
A veterinarian, who tried to save the dog, extracted a pellet from Eddie's intestine after it pierced the diaphragm and liver.
"A neighbor heard three pops,” said Michael Buckley.
Two other pellets were found outside, near where the dog was sitting. The Buckleys think Eddie was targeted because he barked at anyone who walked by.
A month ago, an anonymous note was left in the mailbox complaining of the barking. And whenever the dog barked, it appears someone sounded a car alarm.
"Sometimes the siren would go off five, six, seven times in a row," said Michael Buckley.
The ASPCA has been notified and they said the case will be looked into. The Buckleys have hired a private investigator to determine who shot their dog, and are offering a reward for information.
