| [News] Delay in Bourbonnais dog mauling investigation Because I said I would, I am posting the following as an update. Due to the general comments made about the first post I am hoping that we can travel in a different direction than arguing with each other. We all care very deeply about what happened. Delay in Bourbonnais dog mauling investigation Daily Journal, Kankakee, Illinois 01/25/2009, 10:43 am By Lee Provost lprovost@daily-journal.com 815-937-3364 Bourbonnais police on Friday had not yet interviewed the family regarding details of what transpired Monday afternoon when the family dog caused the death of their 3-week-old daughter. Police Lt. Greg Kunce said Friday that the family had not returned to their home in the 1600 block of Sunridge Drive since the incident. Like the police, the Kankakee County Animal Control staff is also waiting to talk to the family. The Siberian husky that caused the death of Olivia Rozek remains at the shelter. "We are kind of sitting in a holding pattern," Kunce said. The family's second dog has been taken to a family member in southern Illinois, he said. Staff members of the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services completed a home survey Thursday and reported they didn't find anything out of the ordinary, Kunce said. Investigators from the agency's Kankakee office apparently conducted an interview with the parents, but attempts by The Daily Journal to confirm this were unsuccessful. The baby and her twin were lying on their mother's bed at about 5:45 p.m. Monday while the mother was in the kitchen preparing supper. The 32-year-old mother heard a baby cry and then saw the 4-year-old male dog walk into the hallway with the baby in its mouth. The baby was taken to the Provena St. Mary's Hospital emergency room and then airlifted to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood where she was pronounced dead at 11:55 p.m. |

| The family needs time to grieve and provide comfort to each other. They need some private time which needs to be respected. It is always so sad and tragic when a new life is taken in a matter of a split second. Thank you Lou for updating everyone. May baby Oliva rest in peace.

| I find it strange the police department did not interview the family when this tragedy occured. That's their job to interview immediately, no matter what the tragedy, for evidence against or to prevent injustice against those involved. I know this family needs time to grieve no question about this but for the police department not to question this family immediately is not the norm. May this baby RIP and the family find peace somewhere down the road. Terrible tragedy. |

| Carol, I've lived in the area off and on all my life and, believe me, this isn't unusual for local police departments. |

| Yeah! I don't live in that area, but where I am right now is in a smallish town in KY and the police here are just as unusual! Things go uninvestigated... the people they hire are questionable... officers aren't where they ought to be when they ought to be... It's all very strange. I come from a medium sized city in Canada and it seems that the law is a bit more involved there. Sometimes the stories I hear make my jaw drop! (My husband is a cop and his dad is friends with half of them) Makes me lose faith in these types of establishments.

| Extremely sad!! My Prayers are with the family. They must be devastated losing a child in such a tragic way!! I wonder why the Police did'nt talk to the family members who were present right away?? Having the fact that the girls were twins they'll have a constant reminder that one will always be missing!! The dog could've heard the baby crying and was trying to bring her to her mother. Whether or not they were in a crib he still could've gotten in it. They use their mouths to carry their pups and that's what he could've been doing!! No one saw what really happened and it'll haunt these people for the rest of their lives!! I wish the police had done their investigation right away and not have let this much time go by. Crucial evidence was probably lost and peoples memories fade with time and the trauma they've been through!! The fact is a 3 week old baby is dead and nothing will ever bring her back!! My heart and Prayers go out to this family... R.I.P. Little Angel, Olivia...

| You are right Jodi, but I don't think the mother will ever have a memory loss with this one. I think she will see that dog carrying her baby for the rest of her life. The rest of the details will follow. I am determined not to make any inflammatory remarks but I wonder if there was anyone else at home. I wonder if the dogs were penned and got out. I wonder a lot of things so I hope they publish the whole story soon. There hasn't been an obituary in the newspaper yet. That could mean one of two things. 1. The family isn't going to publish one or 2. The coroner hasn't released the body yet. |

| It is, indeed, a sad sad situation. I am surprised that the journal is allowing comments again. They turned off that feature up until now on this story. I wish the family well, I know the mother is going to spend the rest of her life regretting her decision whether it was right or wrong. She will be saying "if only" to herself till she dies. She doesn't need any criminal charges against her - she will punish herself. I wish they could have let the dog live. Do you think the mother gave them some information that led to that decision or do you think they just got rid of it on general principle. |

| I was sad that the dog had to be put down... Maybe it could have gone to a home with no children? It doesn't sound like it was a vicious attack on the newborn. Makes me sad.
